Michael C. Schimpff is a senior civil engineer and hydrologist with Kleinschmidt. He holds a B.A. degree in Biology from Drake University and a Master of Science in Forest Resources from the University of New Hampshire, where his specialty was forest hydrology. He is a Registered Professional Forester as well as a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maine. He is also a Registered Professional Hydrologist with the American Institute of Hydrology.

Mr. Schimpff has conducted numerous hydrologic and hydraulic studies including hydroelectric feasibility studies, PMF analyses, dam breach studies, energy analyses and modeling, watershed modeling, reservoir management, backwater and transient analyses. All of these make extensive use of various computer systems available to Kleinschmidt. He has developed several computer programs to perform various statistical analyses on hydrologic data such as a flow duration analyses and flow frequency analyses. He has expertise in the following computer programs: HEC-1, HEC-2, HEC-RAS, HEC-5, HEC-6, HMR51 & 52, WRC Flood Frequency Analyses, NWS Dambrk, as well as the suite of Microsoft Office programs. He serves as the manager of the water resource engineering group.

In recent years, Mr. Schimpff has gained considerable experience in developing Emergency Action Plans to meet both Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and State Dam Safety requirements. As part of this work, Mr. Schimpff has served as the training facilitator for approximately 15 Functional Exercises. Many clients regularly engage his services to conduct the annual updates of their Emergency Action Plans.

Another area of expertise has been headwater benefits analyses. Mr. Schimpff provides expert testimony in the area of hydrology, estimates of project generation and open channel hydraulics for a variety of litigations.

Mr. Schimpff is a member of the American Water Resource Association, Association of California Water Agencies, American Institute of Hydrology, Association of State Dam Safety Officials, Society of American Foresters, and the National Hydropower Association.
