GIS Analyses for the Dennys River
Watershed Management Plan
Project SHARE
Cherryfield, ME
The Dennys River, located in rural Washington
County, is one of the last remaining watersheds in
the Nation that supports wild native Atlantic
salmon (Salmo Salar) runs. The federal government
listed the Atlantic salmon as endangered in
November 2000.
Kleinschmidt developed a series of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) maps based on a variety of data layers used to develop the Dennys River Watershed Management Plan. The final phase in the EPA Clean Water Act Section 319 program, this plan assesses nonpoint source threats, water quality threats, natural resources and land uses to protect the federally-endangered Atlantic salmon habitat areas. Planners will use the data layers to identify and help reduce threats to Atlantic salmon habitat.
Kleinschmidt worked closely with Project SHARE to acquire state and federal field data. Since many agencies use different datums and projections to collect data, Kleinschmidt combined all sources to ensure one data standard and was responsible for quality assurance.
