Marine Renewable Resource Services

Offshore Wind

The marine renewables group has extensive expertise working on a variety of marine renewable projects, including offshore wind, tidal and wave energy projects. We have developed a detailed understanding of the complex issues facing the development of marine renewables projects, from a permitting, engineering and environmental perspective. We are currently assisting a number of clients seeking to develop offshore wind projects along the East Coast and are involved in wave and tidal projects in the U.S. and abroad. Kleinschmidt is further working in a pro-active manner with national associations, such as NHA, AWEA and OWDC to help reduce barriers to adoption of marine renewables.

Kleinschmidt typically works on both the engineering and regulatory side and as a result has a unique perspective that enables us to understand the balance that often needs to be struck between engineering and environmental considerations, particularly when working in the highly regulated waters of the United States.

Based near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, our marine renewables group is ideally placed to service projects all along the eastern seaboard. Furthermore our Oregon office provides an excellent location for hydrokinetic projects on the west coast. By having local offices in this way, it allows us to provide thorough local knowledge while also being highly responsive to our clients needs.

We believe we have the skills and strong interest level that will be instrumental for the successful development of marine renewables in the U.S. The primary service areas that we are offering to this sector are listed below. Representative Projects:

  • Client: Fishermen’s Energy, LLC
Role: Site selection and environmental appraisal
Project Description: Site evaluation & preparation of BOEM responses for MA, RI, VA & NJ Calls for Interest. Kleinschmidt prepared responses for Fishermen’s energy to BOEM for development of offshore wind off the coasts of several US east coast states including Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Virginia. These submittals involved environmental and engineering appraisal of the study area and use of geospatial analysis and GIS tools to determine optimum selection of OCS blocks.
  • Client: Verdant Power, LLC
    Role: Licensing and Environmental Assistance
Project Description: Kleinschmidt has been assisting verdant power who recently gained the very first US FERC Pilot licence for their 1-MW tidal power plant in the East River in New York City. This is the first commercial tidal power plant in the U.S. and the first FERC licensed pilot project. Kleinschmidt has assisted Verdant in preparing the draft and final license applications – submitted in 2008 and 2010, respectively. In addition to preparation of applications, Kleinschmidt assisted in developing and negotiating study plans with state and Federal resource agencies (NOAA Fisheries, NYDEC, etc.) and prepared draft biological assessments for shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon, sea turtles, and marine mammals. We also prepared an essential fish habitat assessment for the project. The final license application was submitted to FERC in December, 2010 and FERC issued a 10-year Pilot license (the first in the U.S.) in January, 2011.
  • Client: DeepCWind - University of Maine
    Role: Permitting Assistance
Project Description: Floating Offshore Wind Pilot Project, Maine. The University of Maine is conducting research into floating offshore wind designs under a grant from the Department of Energy. Kleinschmidt, in partnership with Sewall Inc. is providing permitting services related to the deployment of 1/3 scale test turbines in state waters. This work involves coordination with state and Federal resource agencies, university researchers and others. This work is ongoing with deployment of test turbines expected in 2012.
  • Client: Confidential Client
    Role: Engineering and Environmental Review
Project Description: Potential 25-MW Floating Wind Farm in Maine. Kleinschmidt, in partnership with Baird Associates, provided a feasibility level review of potential engineering and environmental considerations associated with installation of over 10 miles of subsea cable associated with a potential project in Maine. The study work is complete and was presented in a public report in early 2011.
  • Client: Confidential Client
    Role: Wave Energy Engineering
Project Description: Potential Commercial Wave Energy Project – Chile. Kleinschmidt, in partnership with Baird Associates, is assisting in evaluating potential sites along the Chilean coast for a commercial wave energy project. This work has included defining key project factors and selection criteria for use in a GIS based screening analysis. The work is ongoing.
